We can do this. And we will. Hopefully sooner rather than later. And improving the info environment and the free and fair marketplace of ideas affects AI, it affects science, it affects everything about democracy.

Also, we can do this! We have made rules and laws to structure markets and improve competition, and to structure the marketplace of ideas and improve competition there. That’s what FCC media consolidation rules are. (And Carr is rolling them back to increase the power of oligarchs)
It was a mistake for us to allow Musk to buy Twitter. There was apparently no legal justification to stop him, but the future of media will need rules—maybe based on the principle that competition benefits democracy—to reduce concentrated ownership of major platforms/media.

Even this shows the importance of organized resistance and institutional backing. The NYT (per @jfallows.bsky.social ) dropped out of the #WHCD long ago. That makes it much easier for Peter Baker to say it should be ended.
