They were considered dangerous men with dangerous ideas — the belief that workers deserved fair hours and fair wages, that discrimination against Mexican laborers had to end, and that democracy should extend to both sides of the dividing line between Mexico and the United States.

From downtown alleys, hotels, and bars, these Mexicanos passed coded messages and printed underground newspapers while plotting revolt against Porfirio Díaz.

Before the revolucionarios Francisco Madero and Emiliano Zapata shook Mexico from end to end, before the legendary guerrillero Pancho Villa strode across the borderlands with his cavalry of Dorados, the magonistas had already made this city a base of rebellion.

El Paso, I’ll be back.

So many paisas came out to our event at the theater inside the old Plaza Theatre that we hit capacity and had to turn at least 30 people away. Some showed up at our smaller, private Burges High event the next day, and we let them in.

It was so special to celebrate with family, to honor the place where I’m from, and to see so many people I know and love and grew up with sharing and connecting with the book in ways I could have never imagined. It was a reminder of exactly why I wrote it.

Those words about El Paso’s love for its own ran deep this week.
