(To be fair, a large part of the reason Mexico hardly ever lose there is the opposition they tend to get - they and the USA are by far the most consistently strong teams in North America, so they aren't going to lose too many in World Cup qualifying.)

That is the sort of goal full-backs score, tbf. They aren't your typical centre-back lumps who head in goals when they go up for corners; their skillset tends more towards dribbling and crossing.

Ah, I've now thought of one. Inspectors Fowler and Grim from The Thin Blue Line. Both seem to be in reasonably functional relationships, but their skill as police officers is less in evidence.

Most of the OTB chess players I know are pretty modest about their own skills. Tournament play does tend to impress on you how high the skill levels go.

To give one example, I always feel that a good whodunnit is one that repays being read twice - once before you know the solution, so you get the joy of the reveal, and once after you know it, so that you get to see how the author foreshadowed the solution in the preceding text.
