These objects evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship, as can be seen in the detail of this piece which measures at only 1.5 centimetres tall. 🐞 EAX 11320.

This object was excavated at Abu Hureyra, an early village settlement in Syria where, despite the domestication of sheep and goats, gazelle remained one of the most significant sources of meat for the community.

This tricky technique was invented in France and first came to the notice of the Japanese enamellers when they saw examples at the Paris Exposition in 1900. 🌼 Baluster vase with chrysanthemums, 1900–1910. Plique-à-jour cloisonné enamel, 12.3 cm height. EA1990.5

'Cloisonné is the technique of creating designs on metal vessels with coloured-glass paste placed within enclosures made of metal wires. When the supporting metal ground is removed (rendering it transparent), the technique is called plique-à-jour (shōtai-jippō in Japanese), and is extremely fragile.

This wallpaper design was created by Bamidele Awoyemi and Sobiah Harry, part of a creative team who shaped the Shedding Light installation. This important display recreates a Caribbean living room to reveal the intertwined histories of colonialism, enslavement, sugar production, and ceramics.

Sugarcane, ships, teacups and broken chains represent the history of colonialism, enslavement and emancipation in the Caribbean. This is the historical backdrop from which the Windrush generation emerged — a context that must not be allowed to fade.

Inns, alehouses and taverns have been part of life in the City of Oxford since around 1200. They provided accommodation as well as being sociable places for drinking, eating and gaming. See it on display in Gallery 41, Level 2. 🧩 Puzzle jug, 1250–1350. Ceramic, 35.5 cm height. AN1921.202

This green glazed puzzle jug dates from around 1300 and was found when foundations for the new Town Hall in Oxford were being dug in 1895. The face masks around the rim are a typical Oxford decoration, and it would have been filled through the hole at the top of the hollow handle.
