The ARC @arc-gov-au.bsky.social is up before Senate Estimates this Friday, at 4:15. Plenty of issues with the ARC right now – hope they're questioned! Last on the agenda, again, so let's hope they're not bumped by discussions about the ANU again. Estimates schedule ▶️ www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentar...

To clarify This means ARC made no grant recommendations *to the Minister* in May. I'll include this clarification in future bot posts. What we really need is a similar level of transparency/disclosure from the ARC Board when they approve grants! They could just do this but, sadly, they don't.

US researchers are opposing political veto powers over individual grants👇 It's not just their fight. They supported our calls for changing our ARC legislation in 2023. It worked, but Liberals, Nationals & One Nation have vowed to reinstate political veto powers here. Support your US colleagues!

Assessor reports are now available in RMS

ARC Tracker

#DECRA applicants, the rejoinder period begins on Monday (25 May). You'll get reports from "detailed assessors" – people in your general field, but not necessarily experts on your specific research. Reports will appear in your RMS portal, normally around 11am Canberra time (but it varies).

Mentors & supervisors for #DECRA applicants: Make time in your schedule on Monday – it matters👇 Better yet, make time in your schedule *today* to go over what to expect with applicants you know. Show them your previous assessor reports, & how you responded. Before all the emotion hits on Monday!

And the newly announced Future Fellowships scheme for 2027 (FT27) will take a full 12 months … BAD!

ARC Tracker

Discovery Projects (DP27) still won’t be announced until mid–late Jan. 2027, i.e. 13 months after EOI submission! Similarly, Laureate F’ships – 11 months. However, gladly, Future Fellowships (FT26) will 9 months (back to “normal”).

2111

While ARC wait for Minister to approve their new grant schemes, they’ve created a new round of Future Fellowships (FT27) & Industrial Transformation Hubs & Centres (IC27 & IH27). And they’ve provided 2-week outcome announcement windows! Phew! BUT schemes still generally take longer than last year…

“Australia’s research grant processes have veered off the rails again, with delay & confusion prevailing” Good summary of ARC's new mess: ❌ huge delays ❌ no schemes planned beyond August ❌ Minister holding overhauled grant system in limbo & ❌ vetoing grants for undisclosed security reasons.

Grant vetoes add to delays and confusion for Australian researchFears country is going ‘back to the old days’ as minister declines to explain why projects blocked, and researchers wait months longer for funding decisionswww.timeshighereducation.com

That's a whopping $100M invested in grants! Wow. Despite huge number of applications – presumably 'coz this is the last advertised round of Linkage Projects – there's enough money to give a success rate of 44%! Normally only ~175 grants are *submitted* in round 2, but here 178 have been funded.

Here's a report from @jsresearchpro.bsky.social for Research Professional News on the vetoes of 13 grants by the Minister. They asked ARC whether these grants had been recommended for funding before being vetoed; ARC didn't respond. My guess: yes, they'll have been recommended but I'm not sure.

ARC says they'll announce Linkage Projects outcomes tomorrow, for 2025 round 2 👇 The selection meeting for these grants was held in NOVEMBER last year – 5 months ago 🤯

Australian Research Council

Tomorrow (Tuesday 19 May), we will announce the outcome of the ARC Linkage Projects Round 2 (LP25R2). Stay tuned for the update!

Another Budget week gone &, overall, I'd say Australian research is worse off than last week. Maybe medical research is a bit better off. CSIRO's on slightly firmer footing ("but we'll sack everyone anyway"). University-based research? "Research translation"? Stuffed. No $. No plan. No research.

#LinkageProjects #LP25r2 Given the Minster has vetoed 3 LP25r2 grants, I guess we should expect the outcomes to be announced shortly? ARC said increased security checking was why they increased processing time-frames and blew out announcement windows from 2 weeks to 3 months, right? Right? 🤔

Minister @jasonclaremp.bsky.social has vetoed funding for 13 ARC grants based on security grounds. “Security” is the only way they can veto individual grants anymore* (not just a whim like under the previous legislation). From ARC's “Update on Research Security” 👇 www.arc.gov.au/news-and-pub...
